美国国土安全部重塑公众形象:通过社交媒体强化执法信息传播

With help from Paul McLeary, John Sakellariadis and Daniel LippmanSubscribe here | Email Daniella | Email GigiThe Department of Homeland Security is recalibrating its messaging under Secretary MARKWAYNE MULLIN. Expect a lot more of him, and an emphasis on “humanizing” DHS, on social media in the months to come as Mullin looks to rehab the department’s battered image.DHS shared some extra insights into how it plans to communicate to Americans with Mullin at the helm. The plan is for Mullin to “communicate directly” with Americans, DHS said in response to emailed questions from NatSec Daily. And they plan to use “creative ways to update and inform the public. He will continue to do that to engage directly with the public to break down complicated issues and the wins of DHS. You can expect to see his direct style on our social media,” the department continued. That means Mullin will try to do more frequent cable news interviews than former Secretary KRISTI NOEM did. The department told NatSec Daily that “Secretary Mullin is his own best spokesperson. He will be delivering the message directly to the American people.”Case in point: Mullin appeared Wednesday in a direct-to-camera video on his X account where he highlighted the criminal records of some of the unauthorized immigrants ICE detained the day before. He’s also already doing more interviews. This morning, he joined CNBC’s Squawk Box, where he emphasized that “we look at all the states the same, not in color based on how you vote. It’s ‘protect the homeland.’” Wednesday night, he gave an interview to Fox News’ LAURA INGRAHAM.A new message seems important at DHS, particularly after Noem’s combative tenure that soured many voters on the administration’s immigration enforcement agenda. It remains to be seen if it will work. Recent polling continues to show that Americans still disapprove of the tone and tenor of President DONALD TRUMP’s immigration crackdown. And DHS told NatSec Daily that it “will continue to highlight on social media enforcement actions our officers have taken against the worst of the worst.”Meanwhile, Mullin’s comments to Ingraham Wednesday night that “we’re a nation of immigrants” provoked outrage from some corners of Trump’s base.A key figure will be the next DHS spokesperson — formally titled the assistant secretary of Homeland Security for public affairs. It’s expected that the next spokesperson will serve as a less visible surrogate for the department than former spokesperson TRICIA McLAUGHLIN was.Since McLaughlin left, her deputy LAUREN BIS has led the comms shop at DHS. Bis, the Daily Mail reported last week, angled to get the full promotion, asking White House press secretary KAROLINE LEAVITT to put in a good word for her with the Presidential Personnel Office. But three former and current DHS officials, granted anonymity because they feared retaliation, told NatSec Daily that they and others complained to the DHS White House liaison about Bis’ management style. And they sa
